How to Switch From Internet Explorer to Mozilla Firefox




Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

* Computer with Internet access (preferably high speed and one that you own)
* Brief downloading knowledge
* Access to Mozilla Firefox's website

How to Switch to Firefox From Internet Explorer
Step1
Go to the website listed below in the Resources section (http://www.mozilla.com).

Step2
Once there, click the large button on the screen labeled "download Firefox--free." Then wait for the download to begin. A dialog box then appears that asks "would you like to save this file?" Click the "save file" button on the left.

Step3
Once the file is downloaded, click install and follow the on screen step by step prompts. Your browser will restart with Google.com as your home page. If you would like to change this, go to "tools" on the top menu and select the "main" tab.

Step4
Type in your new home page web address and click the OK button on the bottom of the screen to save this new address. The next time you open Mozilla, the page should automatically default to this.

Step5
You won't notice many differences in using Mozilla but you may not be able to access some websites that are not compatible with Mozilla; so keep Internet Explorer around. The buttons may be a bit different, but you can still have all the toolbars on the top of it, such as yahoo and Google.

Step6
Your "favorites" are now known as "Bookmarks" and can be located under the Bookmarks menu. To save a favorite page, click "bookmarks," and "bookmark this page. You can also organize by placing it into a folder, similar to the process in Internet Explorer.

Step7
HELP! Don't worry, menus are virtually alike in this web browser as to Internet Explorer, but if do you get stuck, click the help menu and explore the choices beneath it. You can also search by topic if you are looking for something specific.

Step8
Firefox also has a neat feature called "Foxmarks" where you can install an add-on (by accessing the tools menu), save a username and password and then access your favorites on any computer with Firefox by entering your username and password. This is an invaluable feature and built right in to the browser.

Step9
MOST OFTEN USED FEATURES:

If you would like to make the text size bigger, simply click the "view" menu on the top of your screen and then select "text size."

If you would like to go back to your starting (home) page, just click the house on the top of the page.

If you would like to refresh the page, hit the F5 key.

The back and forward button functions remain the same. History is also the same. You can set the number of days, etc. and customize it to your needs.

You can still save passwords inside the browser if that is something you prefer to do.

Step1
The package comes with two units (base unit and extension unit) and a six-foot telephone cord.






Step2
Take the base unit and plug it in to a regular electrical wall outlet within 6 feet of one of your existing phone jacks.






















Step3
There are two phone connectors on this unit, one labeled line and one labeled phone. Plug the phone cord that came with the unit into the existing telephone wall jack and the other into LINE on the unit. Take your existing phone line and plug one end into your phone and the other into the unit where it says PHONE.


Step4
Take the extension unit of the Insta Jack and plug in to an electric outlet where ever you desire to have another connection - and that's it...your new jack is installed. Just plug the phone line (or modem or whatever) and you are ready to go. A lot of people would love to have the capability to fax out of their computer - now you can!!

Method #1 ~

~ In the pop up window "My Computer", right click on the drive you wish to defrag (if unsure, select Drive C).
~ From the pop-up menu, left click "Properties" located at the bottom.
~ The Properties Menu will pop up. Left click on the "Tools" tab at the top.
~ Select the "Defragment Now" option.
~ The Disk Defragmenter program will initiate. Left click on "Defragment" to initiate.

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Open Dreamweaver. Start a new blank document by selecting "HTML" under the "New" section of the introduction splash screen.

Step2
Choose the "Insert" menu, then "Media" and then "Flash Button" to bring up the "Insert Flash Button" dialog box.

Step3
Select a predefined style from the "Style" selections for your button. The predefined style will be a style that is already made for you. At this point, you can customize with your own text and colors.

Step4
Type text for your button in the "Button text" textbook, set the font from the "Font" menu and change the size of the font in the "Size" textbook.

Step5
Set the link by keying in the URL or browsing to find a webpage in the "Link" section of the dialog box. Set how you want that link to open by setting the "Target."

Step6
Select a color for the background of the button using the "BG color" color picker.

Save the button using the "Save as" function, and select the "OK" button to create your flash button.

How to check your computer for errors and defragment your computer




Things You’ll Need:

Step1
If you want your computer to run as smooth and as fast as it can, you need to periodically check it for errors and you need to run a defragmentation diagnostics test on it.

Neither test is hard to do. But they are essential for you to get the most out of your computer and for it perform at its peak.

Step2
Under the tools tab you will now have two choices of what actions to perform, an error check or to defragment your drive.

You should start with the error check.

You may also have the option to repair automatically and to scan your computer in an attempt to recover bad sectors. If you have these choices, choose these as well.

The length of time it takes to check for errors will depend on how much data is on your computer.

Your computer may have to restart to perform this function. If it does, it will ask you if you wish to perform an error check the next time you restart your computer. Pick yes and then go ahead and shut down your computer, using the restart option.

When your computer starts again, it should begin searching and possibly repairing any errors.

Step3
After you have done an error check on your computer, you are ready to see if your computer needs to be defragmented. You will need to begin with step one again. This time while you are in the tools tab menu, choose the option defragment.

In the middle of this new screen, you will see a button that says analyze. Click it. Your computer will then analyze whether or not it needs to be defragmented.

It will also show you how much space you will be able to save if you defragment the drive.

Your computer will say if it needs to be defragment or not. If it says you should defragment this volume go ahead and click the defragment button.

Again, the defragmenting time will differ from computer to computer depending on how many files that needs to be compacted.

How to Change the Help Icon in Microsoft Word




Things You’ll Need:

* Microsoft Word

Step1
Make the help icon appear by pressing F1 on your keyboard or clicking the "help," "show the Office Assistant," menu on the top of your screen. Note: If the help or Office Assistant appears when you open up Microsoft Word, you do not need to do this.

Step2
Right click on the Office Assistant (help icon) and select "choose assistant." Many choices will be displayed, depending on the version of Microsoft Word you are running.

Step3
Office Assistant Gallery Screen example Click on the "Gallery" tab and click the "Next" arrow at the bottom of your screen to scroll through and view your options. They will all sound and look a little different. A photo example of this screen appears in this article.

Step4
Click on the "Options" tab to tweak any options and preferences as you see fit. Uncheck the boxes of the features you wish to make disappear.

Step5
Turn down the sound if you are at work or in a public place as many of these helpers have sound effects such as bark, meow, space or sounds related to the icon you choose.

Step6
Click the "Ok" button at the bottom of the Office Assistant Dialog box when you are finished. You can always go back and change the icon as necessary.

How to Find The Common Mistakes Of Email Security


Things You’ll Need:

* AN EMAIL ACCOUNT

Step1
Email Account. Using just one email account :

A good rule for the average email user is to keep a minimum of three email accounts. Your first email account should be used exclusively for work-related conversations. Your second email account should be used for personal conversations and contacts and your third email account should be used as a general catch-all for all hazardous behavior.

That means you should always sign up for newsletters and contests only through your third email account. Similarly, if you have to post your email account online, such as for your personal blog, you should only use your third email account.

Step2
Spammed Email Account. Holding onto spammed-out accounts for too long :

It is a fact that email accounts will accumulate spam over time. This is especially true of the account you use to sign up for newsletters and that you post online.

When this happens, it is best to simply dump the email account and start with a fresh account. Unfortunately, however, many new email users get very attached to their email accounts and instead just wade through dozens of pieces of spam every day.

To avoid the problem, prepare yourself mentally ahead of time for the idea that you will have to dump your 'catch all' (third email account) account every six months.

Step3

Close Your Browser. Not closing the browser after logging out :

When you are checking your email at a library or cybercafé you not only need to log out of your email when you are done, but you also need to make sure to close the browser window completely.

Some email services display your username even after you have logged out. While the service does this for your convenience, it compromises your email security.

Step4
CyberCafe Or Library. Forgetting to delete browser cache, history and passwords :

After using a public terminal, it is important to delete the browser cache, history, and passwords. Most browsers automatically keep track of all the web pages that you have visited, and some keep track of any passwords and personal information that you enter in order to help you fill out similar forms in the future.

For those of you using Mozilla's Firefox, simply press Ctrl+Shift+Del.

Opera users need go to Tools>>Delete Private Data.

Microsoft's Internet Explorer users need to go to Tools>>Internet Options then click the 'Clear History', 'Delete Cookies', and 'Delete Files' buttons.

BCC: TO: CC: Page. Not using the Blind Carbon Copy (BCC) option :

When you put a person's email addresses in the BCC: rather than the CC: window, none of the recipients can see the addresses of the other email recipients.

New email users often rely too much on the TO: because it is the default way of sending emails. That is fine as long as you are writing to just one person or a few family members. But if you are sending mail out to a diverse group of people, confusing BCC: and CC: raises some serious privacy and security concerns. It takes just one spammer to get a hold of the email and immediately everyone on your email list gets spammed.

Step6
Reply Page. Being trigger happy with the "Reply All" button :

Sometimes the mistake isn't in deciding between CC: and BCC: but between hitting 'Reply All' instead of 'Reply'.

When you hit Reply All, your email message is sent to everyone included on the original email sender, and if you didn't intend to include them, the information can be disastrous from both a security and personal humiliation perspective.

Step7
Mail Forwarding Page. Spamming as a result of Forwarding emails :

Forwarding emails can be a great way to quickly bring someone up to speed on a subject without having to write up a summary email.

But you are not careful, forwarding emails can create a significant security threat for yourself and the earlier recipients of the email. As an email is forwarded, the recipients of the mail are automatically listed in the body of the email. As the chain keeps moving forward, more and more recipient ids are placed on the list.

It only takes a few seconds to delete all the previous recipient ids before forwarding a piece of mail, and it can avoid the terrible situation of you being the cause of all your friends or co workers getting spammed.

Step8
Email Backup Page. Failing to back up emails :

Emails are not just for idle chatting, but can also be used to make legally binding contracts, major financial decisions, and conduct professional meetings.

Just as you would keep a hard copy of other important business and personal documents, it is important that you regularly back up your email to preserve a record if your email client crashes and loses data.

Step9
Deleting Email Page. Thinking that an erased email is gone forever :

We've all sent an embarrassing or unfortunate email and sighed relief when it was finally deleted, thinking the whole episode was behind us.

Think again. Just because you delete an email message from your inbox and the sender deletes it from their 'Sent' inbox, does not mean that the email is lost forever. In fact, messages that are deleted often still exist in backup folders on remote servers for years, and can be retrieved by skilled professionals.

So start to think of what you write in an email as a permanent document. Be careful about what you put into writing, because it can come back to haunt you many years after you assumed it was gone forever.

Won The Lottery Page. Believing you won the lottery … and other scam titles :

Spammers use a wide variety of clever titles to get you to open emails which they fill with all sorts of bad things. New email users often make the mistake of opening these emails. So, let me tell you quickly :

• You have not won the Irish Lotto, the Yahoo Lottery, or any other big cash prize.
• There is no actual Nigerian King or Prince trying to send you $10 million.
• Your Bank Account Details do not need to be reconfirmed immediately.
• You do not have an unclaimed inheritance.
• You never actually sent that "Returned Mail".
• The News Headline email is not just someone informing you about the daily news.
• You have not won an iPod Nano.

Step11
Phishing Email Page. Not recognizing phishing attacks in email content :

While never opening a phishing email is the best way to secure your computer, even the most experienced email user will occasionally accidentally open up a phishing email. At this point, the key to limiting your damage is recognizing the phishing email for what it is.

Signs of phishing include:

• A logo that looks distorted or stretched.
• Email that refers to you as "Dear Customer" or "Dear User" rather than including your actual name.
• Email that warns you that an account of yours will be shut down unless you reconfirm your billing information immediately.
• Email which comes from an account similar, but different from, the one the company usually uses.
• An email threatening legal action.
• An email that claims 'Security Compromises' or 'Security Threats' and requires immediate action.

If you suspect that an email is a phishing attempt, the best defense is to never open the email in the first place. But assuming you have already opened it, do not reply or click on the link in the email. If you want to verify the message, manually type in the URL of the company into your browser instead of clicking on the embedded link.

Unsubscribe Newsletters Email Page. Unsubscribing to newsletters you never subscribed to :

A common technique used by spammers is to send out thousands of fake newsletters from organizations with an "unsubscribe" link on the bottom of the newsletter.

Email users who then enter their email into the supposed "unsubscribe" list are then sent loads of spam. So if you don't specifically remember subscribing to the newsletter, you are better off just blacklisting the email address, rather than following the link and possibly picking up a Trojan horse or unknowingly signing yourself up for yet more spam.

Step13
Friends Email Page. Trusting your friends email :

Most new internet users are very careful when it comes to emails from senders they don't recognize. But when a friend sends an email, all caution goes out the window as they just assume it is safe because they know that the sender wouldn't intend to hurt them.

The truth is, an email from a friend's ID is just as likely to contain a virus or malware as a stranger's. The reason is that most malware is circulated by people who have no idea they are sending it, because hackers are using their computer as a zombie.

It is important to maintain and keep updated email scanning and Anti-virus software, and to use it to scan ALL incoming emails.

How to Transfer Data on an Old Laptop to a New One

* New computer with internet capability
* Old computer with internet capability
* A wireless network

Step1
First, connect your old computer to the wireless network. Nowadays most people use the interent through a wireless network. So basically, if you have wireless internet and you are able to get on the internet... that means you are connected.

Step2
Go into the networks settings. This is usually as simple as right clicking the network's icon and then clicking properties. What you want to do is turn on, "file and printer sharing" within the network.

Step3
Now, go to the folders/data that you want to transfer. Right click or get into the properties of that folder. Check the box that says "share this fodler with network".

Step4
On the new computer, connect to the wireless network. Under control panel or possibly the start menu, there should be an option for "My Network Places" or "My Network". In this folder you should find the data that you chose to share from your old computer. You can simply copy/paste or drag/drop the files to your new computer.

Go to socialmarker.com. there are 47 different social bookmarking sites listed in their database so far.

Step2
Be sure you have an account with each of these services. Keep note of your sign in information for each in a notebook or download an application such as roboform or use Flock or FireFox browsers to remember for you.

Step3
Fill in the short form in the top right of the page. Your websites title, url, description and keywords (and keyword phrases!) separated by commas.

Step4
Check all the social bookmarking services you wish to use to promote your website.

Step5
Don't get confused by the lack of submit button. Simply click your enter button when your finished and your promotion will begin!

Step6
A page will appear for each of the selected social bookmarking sites. Click either the log in or register tabs and then fill out the information.

Your information you filled out in the form on page 1 is stored at the bottom of the page. Simply drag and drop this information to the appropriate places on the social bookmarking site's page and click the submit button/tab at the top.

Keep going until all social bookmarking pages have been used. The whole process should take about 15-20 minutes.

How to Record a Network Stream with VLC Media Player


Things You’ll Need:

* VLC Video Lan Media Player
* Internet or network stream
* Computer
* At least 1 gigabyte of hard drive space

Step1
Download VLC Media Player from http://www.videolan.org/vlc/.

Step2
Open a network stream. This is usually a website with a streaming video. Copy the address bar at the top of your browser. It should end in a video extension, such as .mov or .wmv.

Step3
Open the VLC player. Navigate to "File" and then "Open Network Stream". Select the "HTTP" radio button. Paste the address bar into the URL field.

Step4
Under "Advanced Options" select "Save/Stream". Select "Settings". In the next box, select "Play Locally" and then "File". Select the "Browse" button. Choose a saving location. Select "Ok" on both dialog boxes. The video will start streaming through the player and onto your hard drive.

Step5
Once the video is finished streaming, navigate to the saved file. Right click and select "Rename". Add ".MPG" at the end of the file name. The video is now playable and saved to your local disk.

How to Install a Wireless Network




Things You’ll Need:

* Computer
* Internet Access
* Wireless Network Cards
* Modem
* Wireless Router

Step1
PICK A ROUTER – There are tons of wireless routers to choose from. Depending on how big your house or office you might have to purchase multiple routers. The current standard in wireless technology is known as Wireless G. It is rated at a maximum speed of 54Mbps with a radius range of approximately 75'. This is most suitable for small homes or offices. Other types include Wireless A, B, and N and all vary in bandwidth and range. Do some more research and find out what might be suitable for your needs.

Step2
PICK A WIRELESS NETWORK CARD – If you set up a wireless network make sure to get wireless networking cards for each desktop, otherwise there’ll be no way for you to connect to the internet. Most laptops have wireless networking cards built in, check your laptops manual to make sure.

Step3
PLUG IN THE ROUTER - Once you pick out a wireless router that suits your needs plug in the power supply and connect it to your primary computer. If you already have a wired router go ahead and unplug it and throw it aside. Reconnect all the cables from the modem to your wireless router until you see green blinking lights on both the modem and router. This signals that the wireless router is picking up and internet signal.

Step4
SET UP THE ROUTER – Turn on the computer directly connected to the wireless router. Most routers come with software disks that include drivers needed for them to work. Go ahead and install the required software and restart your computer. Once restarted open up your internet browser and type http://192.168.1.1 into the address bar. A window will pop up asking for a username and password. You do not need to enter a username, just enter admin as the password. This may not work for some wireless routers, check your manual for further instructions. Give your router a unique name and set up wireless security right away. You don’t want people using your bandwidth. Select WPA2Personal for security mode and create a password. Share this password only with others you want to grant internet access to.

Step5
Save your settings, turn of your computer. Disconnect any Ethernet cables connected to your computer and congratulations you’ve just set up your wireless network! Now you can access the internet from anywhere in your house or office!

How to host your own website at home




Things You’ll Need:

* A high speed internet connection (preferably one with a high upload rate)
* An extra computer that will run 24/7 with a constant internet connection and with at least 512 mb of ram

Step1
First check to be sure that you do not have anything of value on your old computer because we will be erasing it completely.

Once you have your old computer ready to go download a copy of centos from either http://downloads.madtux.org/free_downloads/free.php?product_key=CentOS50x86_64DVD for the 64bit computer (I have not personally used this but should work just the same as the 32bit one) The 32bit download here http://downloads.madtux.org/free_downloads/free.php?product_key=CentOS50i386DVD (this is what most will be downloading unless you have a fairly new computer.

Next burn the image to a dvd and if your computer does not have a dvd burner or your old computer does not have a dvd reader you can download the cd versions from here: http://downloads.madtux.org/free_downloads/free.php?product_key=CentOS50i386CDSet

Step2
Next insert the dvd or first cd into the old computer and point the bios to boot from it. Install centos. If you need any additional help doing this check out the beginning of this tutorial http://howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_centos5.0

Step3
Once you have booted into Centos for the first time it is a good idea to install the updates (their will be a pop up in the right corner). After you have done this it is time to install everything you will need for your web server. We will be installing only the basic LAMP server (Linux + Apache + MySQL + PHP/Perl).

Step4
First we will install the Apache Web Server 2.0. We will be doing this in the command terminal because it is easier for a tutorial. To open a terminal right click on the desktop and go to terminal.

In the window copy in this text: yum install httpd httpd-devel
and press enter, it should start downloading a little but then it will ask you if you want to download the larger file and you have to press "y" and then enter again. After the terminal returns to the normal prompt copy and paste in:
/etc/init.d/httpd start
this will start your web server for the first time. (a green OK should appear on the right)

Step5
Next we will install the MySQL Database Server. This is not needed for every website but is is certainly something that you might need as you develop your website.

Once again copy and paste in the terminal:
yum install mysql mysql-server mysql-devel
again wait for it to ask you to press y to download the main files.

After you return to the normal prompt, copy in:
/etc/init.d/mysqld start
this will start mysql

Step6
Next we will install the PHP scripting language.

In the terminal again copy and paste in:
yum install php php-mysql php-common php-gd php-mbstring php-mcrypt php-devel php-xml
and press enter as always and again wait to press y and enter to download.

After the installation has completed you will need to restart apache to load in the php you just installed to do so copy in:
/etc/init.d/httpd restart
into the terminal.

Now your server is up and running but to keep it running if you restart the computer copy in:
chkconfig httpd on
(press enter)
chkconfig mysqld on
(press enter)

Step7
Now you are all set on the computer we have to work with the internet end of setting up the web hosting server. To test if your server is running open up firefox and type in:
127.0.0.1
You should see a centos test page if not look back to the apache instillation and see if you installed everything right.

Now to configure the firewalls so that people can access your computer to view your web page, you will need to go to the to left and click on system and then administration and then firewall. And make sure that the http and https are clicked. Next we need to forward your router so that port 80 and 443 are froward to your web server. If you need help forwarding ports there are some excellent tutorials on this website.

Step8
After those ports are forwarded your website (for this tutorial just the centos test page) will be visible on the internet but to access it you have to type in your ip address because we have not set up a domain name yet and you can not access your own website from external internet because you have the same ip address. But if you go to a friends house and type in your ip address (this can be found on the information page of your router) you should see the web page.

Step9
The next step is linking the ip address to a domain name. You might have to pay for a domain but it is not that expensive I got mine for 8 dollars. The only problem is that if you are hosting from a residential internet account your ISP typically gives you a dynamic ip address meaning that it changes often with out your notice. To counter act this I signed up for a free account at no-ip.com and download the linux client that will send your current ip address to there server every 5 min or what ever you like and give you a stable domain name, such as yourwebsite.no-ip.com thus when ever you type that in to your address bar it will find your correct ip address.
Step10
If you are lucky enough to have a static ip address simply point your domain to your ip address. And you are done

How to Disable Validating Identity on Wireless Network


Open Network Connections by right clicking on the network icon on your desktop task bar, and then click on Open Network Connections.















Right click on your wireless connection, and then click on Properties. The Wireless Network Connection Properties dialog box will appear.














Click on the Wireless Networks tab, and then click on the Properties button. A dialog box with your network name on it will appear.













Click on the Authentication tab, and then clear the box for “Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network.” (The box should be empty.) Click OK to exit out.
